About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Thin lenses of fresh groundwater and short vadose zone transit times are typical in atolls such as this one, the Tarawa Atoll in the Pacific Republic of Kiribati. In “Climatic and human influences on groundwater in low atolls” (p. 581-590), Ian White, Tony Falkland, Taboia Metutera, Eita Metai, Marc Overmars, Pascal Perez, and Anne Dray explore these vulnerable water supplies, drought, human activities, and climate change. The paper is part of this issue's special section, Groundwater Resources Assessment under the Pressures of Humanity and Climate Change (GRAPHIC), derived from the international symposium and project by the same name sponsored by UNESCO.
